We have listened to our patients, carers and members of the public who have asked us to develop a Forum for their views, their values and their needs to be heard and supported. The Hospice recognises that coping with a serious, life limiting illness presents many challenges for all involved.
We meet at 3.30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month. We extend our invitation to join the group to all of our current patients and to people in the community who have been diagnosed with a life limiting illness. Each group within the Forum, patients and carers meet separately to enable them to discuss their own personal concerns and wishes. However, there is opportunity towards the end of each meeting for these groups to meet together and share common thoughts and concerns.
Our Carer Group meeting is held in the Day Hospice Lounge area and our Patient Group meeting is held in the Conservatory attached to the In Patient Unit. Ideally our patients and carers set the theme for the groups and we will arrange guest speakers who they believe will be of most benefit to them.
We believe we can help Patients and their Carers with:
- Looking after themselves.
- Gathering information that can inform them of their condition and choices.
- Access to other services.
- Financial advice and Welfare Rights.
- Information on employment rights for carers.
- Legal issues such as Power Of Attorney and making a Will.
- Stress management
- Information and support in managing symptoms.
- Spiritual and emotional support.
- Expert help and advice from the Hospices multidisciplinary professional team.
Our group members can be reassured that information shared is confidential and that we can support both patients and carers through what can be a difficult and at times distressing journey with warmth, understanding and professional skills.
