Halton Haven Hospice is pleased to announce the date for the fourth annual Twilight Walk. The event is scheduled to return on Saturday 7th July 2012 at 8pm...

Halton Haven Hospice is pleased to announce the date for the fourth annual Twilight Walk. The event is scheduled to return on Saturday 7th July 2012 at 8pm.

Last year saw hundreds of fundraisers take part in the biggest Twilight Walk to date with over 700 walkers finishing the 10km stretch from Widnes Stadium over the bridge to the Runcorn Town Hall and then finishing back at the stadium – in time for a bacon buttie at the finish line!

The event is one of the biggest in the calendar for Halton Haven Hospice, second to the hugely successful Light Up A Life service that takes place in December. The Twilight Walk helps raise much needed funds to allow your local Hospice to continue to deliver free services to the Halton Community.

This year we have a fantastic selection of entertainment to get you on your way including Saint Peter and Paul’s Samba Band, the Widnes Vikings Vixons and the brilliant Roy Basnett from Wire FM.

Ciaran Clotworthy, Events Manager from Halton Haven Hospice said: “This year we want it to be bigger than ever, and need the local community to get on board. Every year we always have a tremendous support, and the effort walkers go to is wonderful. Fancy dress for the event is optional, but each year more and more walkers get dressed up and have a laugh. This year we want to encourage more groups to get involved which is reflected in our new ticket prices for 2012.”

We are offering a slightly different pricing structure this year to encourage more families to take part. We are introducing a family ticket, where for £38 it will cover the cost of 2 adults and up to 4 children under the age of 16

Why not encourage your friends, family and work colleagues to take part and purchase a group ticket for £100- entry for up to 10 people.

Individual entries cost £15.

Registration forms can be picked up from any of the 4 shops or at the Hospice.

Grace, aged 11 from Pewithall School and Abbie, aged 10 from Daresbury Primary School together raised £30 in their Easter Raffle with 6 Easter eggs as prizes. They independantly chose the hospice as they were aware of the vital funds needed to keep it open. As Girl Guides they wanted to use this opportunity to work towards their Community Badges.

When they arrived at the Hospice, Grace and Abbie were given a special tour to see how the money they raised would be put to good use. They also met some of the nursing staff on duty that day.

Ciaran Clotworthy, Events Manager at Halton Haven Hospice said ‘We would like to say a huge thank you to Grace and Abbie for choosing to raise funds for the hospice at their Easter Raffle. It’s great to see younger members of the Halton Community wanting to make a difference and help us continue our special kind of caring. Thank you girls!’

Halton Haven Hospice is proud to announce Forget Me Not Week taking
place from the 26th May to the 1st June 2012. A week dedicated to raising
crucial funds for the Hospice.

In this week, we want local fundraisers to go purple in their fundraising
activities, get involved and support your local Hospice.
Hannah Denny, Fundraising Support Officer said: ‘We want Halton to come
on board and support the Hospice with our new awareness week – this is the
first time we’ve done something like this before, and we want local schools,
high schools, supporters of the Hospice to fundraise for us during this week”
“From purchasing a Halton Haven Hospice t-shirt / wristbands to dying your
hair purple or by baking purple cakes, everyone can go purple in some way
and support the Hospice.”
“You could have a dress down day at work, where everyone must wear a
purple item of clothing, you could even wear our t-shirts!”
“And of course you can come up with your own fundraising ideas as well, the
more individual the better!”
“Even Tina and I from the Events Team will be dying our hair purple for the
week, so get on board and join us to turn Halton purple in the last week of
May!”

How about holding a Forget Me Not Coffee Morning?
Instead of going to the coffee shop, invite your friends to your house and get
them to donate the money they would have spent on coffee to the Hospice, or
encourage your work to get involved and hold a coffee break!
You could get your family and friends to cook some tasty treats – purple
cakes would be great!

We can supply an information pack on how to host your own event. Or if you
know someone who you think would make a great coffee morning host, get
them to sign up.

For a Forget Me Not fundraising pack, please contact the Fundraising Team

on 0151 495 2111.

Halton Housing Trust has completed a transformation of the offices at Halton Haven Hospice, creating a much needed better space for the charity’s employees.

Halton Housing Trust has completed a transformation of the offices at Halton Haven Hospice, creating a much needed better space for the charity’s employees. The team spent two weeks renovating offices at the Hospice in a show of support for the work that is carried out there.

“Our work at the hospice has had a positive impact on both its surroundings and the mentality of the Trust employees involved,” said Stephen Vaughan, Project Officer at the Trust.

“Dedication and enjoyment amongst Trust staff has been brilliant. Many have turned up early to get work started and stayed late to get jobs finished, even tasks like rubbing down chairs everyone has been happy to do.”

Development of the Hospice has included stripping wallpaper, plastering and painting various walls, replacing lights and converting a toilet area to a shower room. People from all areas of the not-for-profit organisation have worked together and contributed.

Thousands of pounds have been spent making the hospice a comfortable place where adults with life-limiting illnesses can receive care and their families be offered the support they need.

Halton Haven has been the Trust’s nominated charity for the past year and the renovation carried out has been part of this ongoing support.

A number of the Trust’s local contractors helped the project by offering products for free or at cost!

Ciaran Clotworthy, Events Manager, said: “On behalf of the Hospice I would like to thank every single person who has been involved in this project for all their hard work over the past two weeks.”

“Nothing was too much trouble for them; they got on, got the job done and in turn created a fantastic new work area.”

“The relationship we have with Halton Housing Trust is absolutely brilliant and long may it continue!”

Thank you!

Pete Weatherhead from Preston Brook, Runcorn is getting ready for a challenge that only a small amount of people in the world have ever managed to complete. He is aiming to cycle the full length of the Mississippi River in America covering 3000 miles in just 4 weeks. This will see Pete cover an average of 100 miles a day for 30 days! Pete is aged 60!

Pete will start his expedition on the 1st May starting at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, travelling though 10 states, finishing where the river exits into the Gulf of Mexico. He will be joined by his stepson, Paul Broome, who currently lives in New Orleans.

Pete Weatherhead said: “On 5th October last year, my wife Margo sadly passed away after an illness; we were a few weeks shy of celebrating our Silver Wedding Anniversary.”

“Margo’s last wish was that I scatter her ashes on the Mississippi River that she loved so much.”

“I started to plan my trip to America when it suddenly occurred to me, with a little inspiration from Billy Connolly’s, Route 66, that I should cycle the Mississippi River – I decided to name the challenge after my late wife- ‘Margo’s Mississippi Meanderings’”

“It’s the biggest challenge I have ever taken part in- the word Mississippi means ‘Great River’ and it will be the greatest challenge I’ll have ever done.”

How will Pete survive this ordeal? “Jelly babies and bananas! When I first mentioned it to my stepson, the first thing he said to me was, ‘North to South? Don’t worry it’s all downhill!’ I wish this was true!”

Pete is no stranger to challenges having taken part in Marathons all over America, including New York, Boston, Washington, Seattle and Las Vegas!

Nando’s have proudly chosen Halton Haven Hospice as their charity of the year and on Monday 13th February, Nandos lived up to their promise as they handed over a cheque for £500. This donation came from the sales made during the training period when Nando’s first opened.

Katie Neil, Nando’s Manager said: “We’re proud to inject some Peri-Peri life into Widnes and support Halton Haven Hospice! We’re looking forward to supporting the Hospice with their fundraising activities in the year ahead and are eager to get involved and support the Hospice as much as we can”

Nando’s staff also decided that they would like to donate a proportion of their staff tips on a monthly basis to the Hospice. The Nando’s team came up with this generous idea by themselves and put it forward to management whom thought the idea was fantastic.
Halton Haven Hospice is proudly teaming up with The Mark Gorry Foundation to organise this exciting, new event for 2012.

This event is not for the faint hearted as the bike ride will cover over 160 miles and you be challenged to complete this in just two days. This challenge will test how fit you really are. Is this not the perfect way to get in better shape in the New Year whilst raising much needed funds for two fantastic charities?

The bike ride will take place on the 2nd and 3rd of June. It will cover the demanding Trans Pennine Trail starting at the Hull KR stadium, bright and early on the Saturday morning and will finish back at the Stobart Stadium Halton in Widnes on Sunday afternoon.

Tina Robinson, Lottery & E-Marketing Officer at Halton Haven Hospice said: “This will be an intense challenge and a first of this nature organised by the Hospice and MGF. We hope cyclists in the community will join us for an unforgettable experience and help raise vital funds for both charities. If you want to set yourself a goal for the year get in touch!”

There are only 50 places available & if you want to be part of the team you will have to get in quick!

Click here to view the website & to download an application form

If you secure a place then you will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit of £75 which will cover the cost of an overnight stay in a hotel, meals for both days and transport up to Hull on the Saturday. The minimum sponsorship you must raise is £300.

Halton Haven Hospice cares for people aged eighteen years and over with life-limiting illnesses living in Halton and surrounding areas. We provide support to patients and their families according to their individual needs. As a Charity, we make no charge for any of our services.

Whilst we have a contract with the local Primary Care Trust (PCT), the majority of our income comes from the generosity of the local community. Situated in beautiful grounds in Runcorn, we have 12 in-patient beds and 60 places a week in our Day Hospice; over the last 29 years Halton Haven Hospice has cared for and supported thousands of local people in Halton.

The Mark Gorry Foundation was set up in 2009 by Mark Gorry during his battle with Testicular Cancer. The foundation has two main goals, the first is to positively impact the future of cancer treatment through a range of fundraising activity. In their first 18 months MGF have given over £60,000 to cancer services and people affected by cancer.

The second goal is to educate men on the signs and symptoms of Testicular Cancer, and to promote & encourage self examination. The Mark Gorry Foundation take their Ball Squad to school, colleges, workplaces and shopping centres with signs and symptoms encouraging men to love their ‘balls’.
